Self-determination of oppressed nations to be debated in the Spanish Congress

Basque, Catalan and Galician independentist parties will propose that the Kingdom of Spain acknowledges the right to self-determination of the smaller nations trapped withing its political-military structure, namely the Basque Country, the Catalan Countries and Galicia. The proposal will be supported by Amaiur (Basque Country), Catalan Republican Left (ERC, Catalonia) and the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG, Galicia).

It is self-evident that the Spanish unionist parties, benefiting not just from the much larger population of Castile and centuries of cultural-political propaganda and forced assimilation of peripheral peoples, but also from a rigged electoral system that clearly favors the rural provinces, most of them Castilian or assimilated, will reject the bill but the proponents are realistic and just aim that the issue is more and more present as part of the political debate.
