Cables from the class war (Aug 10)

Europe

Britain: riots continue:
  • London almost calm because of massive police deployment but riots elsewhere: Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and nearby Salford, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, Oxford, Gloucester and Cardiff (Wales). See interactive map at The Guardian for details.
  • Three men (aged 31, 30 and 21) of South Asian ethnicity murdered by speeding car in front of a mosque in Birmingham, where they have joined a vigilante picket. The murderer remains at large but New Zealand TV speculated he could be a fascist vigilantes that yesterday were crying against "the Pakis" in some places. One person was arrested according to BBC but his/her identity has not been released yet. Police containment of Nazi EDL gangs threatening random Black people was also broadcasted at Euronews.
  • Police is now using all the anti-riot gear at their disposal, including water cannons, tear gas, cavalry charges and rubber or plastic bullets, for the first time used in Great Britain (though they were very common in Northern Ireland before the peace agreements).
  • Worth reading opinion articles on the riots:

Andalusia: 75th anniversary of the murder by rebel fascists of Andalusian nationalist and revolutionary leader Blas Infante. The "death sentence" was only redacted four years after the execution but the fascist were no shy about their criminal motivations: they killed Infante for creating an Andalucist party and for promoting a revolutionary electoral list. ··> Kaosenlared.

Football: Javi Poves (25, Sporting de Gijón) abandons commercial football in spite of promising career ahead.

It is only money and corruption. It is capitalism and capitalism is death.

America

Honduras: more than 50 students arrested, schools militarized. Students protest against the privatization of public education and suppression of some careers, notably teaching and trade. ··> LINYM[es].

Chile: New clashes between students and police. Students protest against profiting from education. ··> BBC.

Asia

Palestine: Gaza blackout continues and media does not mention it ··> Twitter.

Japan: nuclear catastrophe mismanagement:
  • Citizens to be returned to the Naraha-machi, within the 30 km "voluntary" evacuation zone around Fukushima Daiichi. The area is extremely contaminated but the Japanese authorities are not behaving with any rationality at all. ··> Ex-SKF.
  • Fukushima Daiichi 1 begins to be covered, alleged hiding from satellites. ··> Ex-SKF.
  • Government considering a second see, probably at Osaka. ··> ABC.
  • Tokyo citizen who never went to Fukushima has internal exposure (Cesium137: 868bq
Cesium134: 6373bq), surely because of Government's criminal negligence, which is allowing radioactive food and stuff to circulate. I do not buy anything more from Japan (but neither from elsewhere in East Asia nor North America because I do not trust most of the implicated governments, including mine, on radiation testing seriousness and those countries have been exposed to at least some extent). ··> Fukushima Diary.
  • Another nuclear plant, Tsuruga, in the South West of the country, may be in trouble. ··> Fukushima Diary.
