The naked scanners already implemented in many US airports are a serious potential health risk, according to scientists from that country.
While the dose would be safe if it were distributed throughout the volume of the entire body, the dose to the skin may be dangerously high, the scientists (J. Sedat et al.) wrote.
Men's sexual organs are exposed to the X-rays. The skin is very thin there, said Dr. Michael Love.
While US Office of Science and Technology claims that the artifacts have been tested extensively, it is difficult to believe what US institutions claim after what we are watching in the Gulf of Mexico, for instance.
And the devices cannot be tested independently as they are classified. We still don't know the beam intensity or other details, said Dr. Sedat.
If "randomly" selected to go through one of those, you can refuse... but then a throughout manual body-search will be performed, what can be humiliating. Still, some pilots prefer that:
Politely decline exposure and request alternative screening [even if] the enhanced pat-down is a demeaning experience, said Captain David Bates, president of Allied Pilots Association.
